"The Dream", also known as "The Song", or even "Reve Exotique" is the last of Henri Rousseau's more than 25 jungle themed paintings, and the largest at 6' 8 1/2" x 9' 9 1/2". In fact, it's his last completed work. Rousseau wrote a poem to explain the painting, Inscription pour La Reve. He still said it was one possible interpretation.
The girl is Yadwigha, his Polish mistress of his youth, and he painted it while romantically involved a with Leonie, a shop assistant.
Rousseau was a French post-impressionist of the Naive or Primative manner, The jungle was inspired by his trips to a zoo and naturalist books. He worked as a toll and tax collector until he started painting in his forties, retiring at 49 to paint full time. Like Van Gogh, critics did not appreciate the self-taught Rousseau, but he became highly influential among the avant garde.
Pablo Picasso found a Rousseau painting for sale as a canvas to be painted over. Loved it. Went to meet Rousseau, and then held a banquet in his honor, infamous as Le Banquet Rousseau, 'one of the most notable social events of the twentieth century.' Half serious, half burlesque, it was in sixties parlance, a 'Happening' that would have made Andy Warhol proud. Leo Stein and Gertrude Stein attended along with other artistic notables of the period.
