This coffee or tea mug is of “Soliento 2” by Edvard Munch. This Sunrise is more reflective of the lighter side of his life than we’re use to.

Munch was an Expressionist, a Surrealist, heavily influenced by his early exposure to Impressionists Monet and Manet, then the Post-Impressionists like Van Gosh, Gaugin, and Crezanne. From what is now Oslo, he split his time between Paris and Berlin before returning to Oslo. Known for a large body of depressive artworks, like The Scream, that period of travel produced more light-hearted fare.

In real life, he didn’t take good care of his works. Some were stashed outside, and show paw prints and bird droppings, and water damage.

Known as a painter, he also had a great interest in the technology of the time. One famous quote is “Had I been in possession of the as yet undiscovered little remote telephone which one carries around in one’s pocket, you would have long ago received communications from me.” So does he get credit for conceptualizing today’s cell phone? Owning a camera, he also took a lot of selfies, many in front of his paintings. And in bed. And in the garden.

You may have guessed from “The Scream” that he had a very emotional side. He did. He was known to have a temper, getting into fights, and almost a duel. He drew caricatures of his enemies. He couldn’t let things go and obsessed over them.

On the lighter side, he loved his dogs. He painted them, and even took one to the movies with him.

What makes Munch a Boho artist? “The frequent preoccupation in Munch's work with sexual subject matter issues from both the artist's bohemian valuation of sex as a tool for emotional and physical liberation from social conformity as well as his contemporaries' fascination with sexual experience as a window onto the subliminal, sometimes darker facets of human psychology.” (TheArtStory.org) Wow.
