"The Seasons" (1897)by Alphonse Maria Mucha
Alphonse Mucha because synonymous with Art Nouveau, or as he called it, New Art. He referred to the women in his portraits as the New Women. His style was so unique that other artists gave it it's own category, Le Style Mucha.
Mucha shared a Bohemian apartment with Paul Gaugin, (he rigged the door so that music played when the door opened). and there's a photo of him playing harmonica at one of their parties there, sans pants. He was friends with the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and became famous when he did a poster of Sarah Bernhardt for a play, and she put him under contract.
His success in the Belle Epoch period was a blend of commercial and fine art, based in philosophy. Mucha's belief was that art had both a moral and a political purpose and should be spiritual as well. Truly a leader of a Boho style.
