"Two Women by the Shore Mediterranean" (1896), by Henri-Edmond Cross
Cross wrote "I want to paint happiness, happy beings who will have become mankind in several centuries when pure anarchy will be realized." "Two Women by the Shore, Mediterranean" certainly seem to be those happy beings.
His early painting were dark, but after meeting Monet, he moved into lighter works.
The neoimpressionists exhibited a philosophical vision of a superior humanity directed by self-will, using a systematic scientific approach to form and color by applying cutting edge optical science. Cross was the most acclaimed master of neo-impressionism. By later using larger, more vibrant points than than usual in pointillism like his friend George Saurat, he also broke ground into the later cubism.
When the original Salon rejected his works, along with other new painters, he helped found the Society of Independent artists. He also changed his name from Delacroix so as not to be confused with a more traditional artist of the same name.
